Barns & Attics Are Attractive Hiding Places For Squirrels

April 30, 2018
The presence of squirrels in attics is a fairly common pest problem for homeowners. One of the most blatant and obvious signs of squirrels is the frequent banging and scratching that often carry down through the floorboards to the rest of the house. In fact, some may be amazed that these fairly small animals are able to make so much noise in the first place. Squirrels will nest in trees and or other above-ground locations, but if they come across a sheltered area like an attic or barn, they certainly won’t hesitate to make that space their own.
Attics prove extremely attractive for squirrels, especially in the winter, because they’re dry, warm, and provide the perfect place for storing nuts and stockpiling food. Attics are also free of predators which is always rare in the wild. Many pest control experts agree that attics are the most attractive places for these pests to hunker down and breed, which means that removing squirrels from attics should be a top priority.
There are a number of ways to remove squirrels from the home, although many professionals simply prefer to trap and remove the animals. Squirrel-sized cages are available all across the country in hardware or specialist stores, and will normally provide the most convenient means of removal. Be sure to place your traps at the correct entry point.
If you feel compelled to take matters into your own hands, it is possible to trap the offending rodents and move them to a different location. It’s extremely important to note, however, that many squirrel colonies can include as many as twenty members. Merely catching and trapping a pair of squirrels, therefore, will not be adequate to permanently remove these creatures from your home. Before you begin laying traps, be sure to block all possible entrances and exits into your attic except one. This is your opportunity to essentially bottleneck the squirrels into traversing the route you can now seed with traps.
Squirrels are most active in the early morning and in the evening, but also leave their nests at multiple times throughout the day. It’s well worth remembering that removing squirrels is a slow process, but if the regimen is adamantly kept to, you can eventually remove all of the invasive animals and ensure that they don’t come back.
