Exclusion Is Your Best Bet For Cricket Control

4/29/2018

Although they’re mainly content to stay outdoors, crickets can occasionally become a severe problem when they find their way into your home. Crickets are normally omnivorous, and their diets usually consist of plants and both live and dead insects. When these pests enter your home, however, they can consume fabric and clothing. Crickets are nocturnal, and they’re most known for their unique chirping when the sun goes down. During the day, these insects will find a warm and moist area in which to hide.

When inside homes, crickets can often be found in basements, kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces, and around water heaters and furnaces. Additionally, crickets will often hide behind baseboards and inside cracks and crevices in foundations. Crickets can even hide inside the cavities of walls, and their near-incessant chirping can resonate through a house, driving the occupants up the wall in the process.

Like many other insects, the reproductive cycle of crickets coincides with springtime. These pests will lay their eggs in the fall, usually in soft warm soil. The eggs will then hatch in the spring, and the cycle will begin anew. In accommodatingly warm weather, crickets can be found in fields, in piles of debris, and around garbage dumps. As many homeowners can attest, crickets are drawn to electric lights, and they can show up unexpectedly in huge numbers. Whenever these pests congregate, you can be sure that they’ll start consuming almost anything they come into contact with, including expensive landscaping which may ultimately have to be replaced.

Many pest control experts suggest that one of the most effective cricket-prevention methods is to reduce areas of moisture around your property. It’s also important to keep your yard free of debris, and to make sure that the grass is cut on a regular basis. Cutting down the number of places that crickets can hide will go a long way to mitigating the risk of an infestation.

You may also consider changing the outdoor light bulbs around your home. Yellow-colored bulbs or sodium vapor lamps will not attract nearly as many insects as traditional outdoor lighting. As you may expect, employing effective exclusion methods, including repairing holes in screens and caulking any cracks and crevices you may find, is a much more cost-effective long-term pest control strategy. It’s always easier to keep pests out initially, as opposed to removing them once they’ve established a foothold inside your home.
