Mice Can Easily Spread Diseases & Parasites

March 16, 2018
House mice in Houston are common and often quite dangerous pests that can be found throughout North America. Mice can be found both in cities and in rural areas, and they’re sure to be found wherever humans throw out food. Mice are extremely adaptable pests mainly because they eat a wide variety of food, including seeds, grains, grubs and worms, and dry foods that humans may be storing.
Mice like to hide in quiet, out-of-the-way places like attics, basements, and crawlspaces. In the winter, mice will be desperate to find warmth and food, and they’ll often manage to wrangle their way into your home to get it. Once mice are inside your home, they have the potential to cause health problems for your family and to damage furniture, wiring, and walls.
Like beavers, mice must keep gnawing constantly to keep their teeth from growing out of control. This leads to ever-growing damage to furniture and storage boxes, and anywhere in which mice suspect there may be food. There are also many documented cases of house fires caused by mice chewing through wiring. When mice establish themselves inside homes, they’ll often make their nests as close to sources of food as possible. Areas like kitchens and pantries are particularly likely to harbor these pests. In order to combat these pests, it’s important to clean these areas thoroughly to keep them free from crumbs and spills. If possible, keep pet food sealed and stored, and make sure that any opened food is kept in bags or tight-fitting Tupperware.
Another reason why mice are particularly tricky pests to get rid of is that they breed incredibly quickly. Once they’ve successfully established themselves in your home, and once they have sufficient access to food and water, these pests will immediately begin to procreate. The gestation period of mice is usually around twenty days, and they can have up to twelve pups in a litter. The typical female can give birth up to ten times a year, which means that mouse populations can grow exponentially and can actually get out of hand alarmingly fast.
With so many mice in one place, they have an amazing propensity to spread diseases like hantavirus and parasites like fleas. Since mice are attracted to food sources, the likes of which are stored in your kitchen, it’s not uncommon for mice to spread disease simply by traversing cooking surfaces and simply depositing bacteria as they move.
